Good point.

The war actually began in 2014, when Putin invaded Crimea.

Putin is directly responsible for every death that has occurred since.

Ukraine achieved independence from Russia in 1991, during the fall of the USSR.

In summary, Ukraine is a democracy - Russia is not.
Every province of Ukraine voted for independence from Russia in 1991 - even Crimea. Russian speaking Ukrainians are still Ukrainians, just as French speaking Canadians are still Canadians.

The war ends when Putin leaves Ukraine.
