Over an 86-year period, more than 100,000 British boys and girls
were sent to Canada in hopes of a better life, beginning in 1863.

Known as "Home Children," these children often came from poor families or were orphans.

Some children went on to live on farms with loving families,
however, others suffered neglect, abuse and loneliness.

Even after concerns were raised about Home Children, Canada continued to receive British children until 1949.

Today, it is estimated that 10 percent of Canadians are descendants of Home Children,
though many people are unaware.

The Canadian government declared 2010 the "Year of the British Home Child"
and Canada Post released a commemorative stamp honouring all the children sent to Canada.
