There is so MUCH that people do NOT know of this era of time

    Around 1900,
over 85% of the population in America were living below poverty levels,
and, 85% of the population of America WERE BORN in America.
IMMIGRATION was only at approx 15% per year,
which has NOT changed much over the years !!!

    A house cost $500,
and, a farm cost between $1000-$1500-$2000-$2500
UP TO $5000 for a very fancy one !!!

THiS TRULY WAS THE #GENERATION that did make #AMERICA great !!!

    THE GENERATION that birthed
THE iDEA of living "THE AMERiCAN DREAM"

This is a photograph of a young girl
    making homemade biscuits in 1938.

Take a very deep look into this picture...
    especially if you think,
you are having it bad in todays world...
    because this was a generation
    that sure was NOT coddled,
    but, were very skilled workers...
there was NO margin for error,
esp. in making food, as, there was a shortage of food...
    and, it was very expensive.

    These folks,
    were as tough as nails.
    These folks,
    rose with the sun,
worked their fingers to the bone,
and, were lucky to have '1' bath a week !!!
and, they had to heat the water on the top of a pot belly stove !!!

These folks had to make the changes necessary
to work their own way out of poverty, because over 85% of the people
    lived below poverty level...
    There was NO baby bonus,
There was NO churches handing out free food,
There was NO dental care for free,
    There was NO food banks,
    There was NO government assistance,
    There was NO government grants,
There was NO government money for programs,
There was NO health care for free,
    There was NO food stamps,
    There was NO public housing,
    There was NO welfare,

if your parents couldn't look after you,
they took you to a local big town,
and, put you on the street !!!

as soon as you were 16, old enough to quit school,
most folks, had to go to the big town for work !!!

SO, PEOPLE had to pull themselves out
of their own set of circumstances,
and, alter and change their situations
by deciding how to live simple in the now
and, how to invest into their futures,
it was NO easy times !!!

1938 was a long time before anyone
had even thought, or, even heard of #welfare

People who immigrated to America were NOT privileged
most of them, where displaced, and, needed to come to a country
to build a new dream - THE AMERICAN DREAM
(most did NOT have more than $100 IN THEIR pockets)

and, THIS was THE ROOT of iMMiGRANT PRiViLEGE !!!

However, that did NOT start until after
you had paid off your debt...
    which required for many,
7 to 11 years of service against your indentured servant contract
    where you got to work,
as, a house girl, or a farm boy to pay for your one way
voyage on a dirty old boat to AMERiCA for a better life !!!
(many farm boys lived in the barn)
and, many house girls were mistreated, and, also raped.

There is so MUCH that people do NOT know
about this 'era of time', that it is shocking that many do NOT
even KNOW their own family histories.

    i recall my grandmother stating...
"we live in the best of times,
    and, the worst of times,
    at the same time"
    ~Viola Mae Drury - Handy

Viola Mae Drury - Handy had to travel from the province of Ontario,
to B.C., to study as a registered nurse...
it was very uncommon in the 1920's for a woman to be university educated, she was a mid-wife, registered nurse, and, assisted her father
dr. Drury, a surgeon with surgeries.

    Around 1900,
over 85% of the population in America
    were living below poverty levels,
and, 85% of the population of America
were born in America, and, were NOT immigrants...
    interesting cenus stat, shows that:
IMMIGRATION was only at approx 15% per year,
which has NOT changed much over all the years !!!

Back in 1900, a house cost $500, to $1000 (for a very fancy one)

and, a farm cost between $1000-$1500-$2000-$2500
UP TO $5000 for a very fancy one, with 100 or 200 acres.

LOOKING BACK, it was these hard working pioneers
who were the ones, who TRULY were THE #GENERATION
that did whatever they could, to make #AMERICA great !!!

    THE GENERATION that birthed
THE iDEA of living "THE AMERiCAN DREAM"

first you do NOT buy what you don;t need - unless; you are putting it into some sort of saleable inventory , to say buy for $100 and sell for $200 for maybe even just $150

there are some things; i buy at a cost; and; sell at almost the same cost; just to help others to move things; and; get them to a more visable spot, that adds variety to what i already have - but; it is a fine art being an honest type of trader

You can't go back to bartering and trading products between people the government wouldn't be able to collect tax on those items and therefore they would put you in jail for tax evasion !!

In the late 1950s, the poverty rate was approximately 22 percent, with just shy of 40 million Americans living in poverty. The rate declined steadily, reaching a low of 11.1 percent in 1973 and rising to a high of nearly 15 percent three times – in 1983, 1993 and 2011.

The United States in 1900 Previous Next
      Digital History ID 3175
Life expectancy for white Americans was just 48 years and just 33 years for African Americans--about the same as a peasant in early 19th century India. Today, Americans' average life expectancy is 74 years for men and 79 for women. The gap in life expectancy between whites and non-whites has narrowed from 15 years to 7 years.
In 1900, if a mother had four children, there was a fifty-fifty chance that one would die before the age of 5. At the same time, half of all young people lost a parent before they reached the age of 21.
In 1900, the average family had an annual income of $3,000 (in today's dollars). The family had no indoor plumbing, no phone, and no car. About half of all American children lived in poverty. Most teens did not attend school; instead, they labored in factories or fields.
The nation's population shifted from the Northeast to the Sunbelt. In 1900, Toledo was bigger than Los Angeles. California’s population was the size of the population in Arkansas or Alabama. Today, Sunbelt cities like Houston, Phoenix, and San Diego have replaced Boston, Cleveland, and St. Louis. In 1900, about 60 percent of the population lived on farms or in rural areas. Today, one in four lives in rural areas; more than half live in suburbs.

the first fur trader came to northern bc was fraser. the fraser river was named after him. around 1860, from 1862-1868, the small pox was introduced to bc and killed of many indian people. the first census was around when my great grandfather was born, in 1855. he still lived in the old way of my ancestors. after that. it went down hill fast for my people. estimated on my main rez was 350, two smaller bands had a population of 100 people each. in 1903, 83 people, in 1906, it was 77 people. the other two rezs had no more people there left. 6 people were left from hreene timber band and they joined the main rez. one of my ancestors was from this band.of the 6 people left alive after the small pox epidemic. comes from james teit book.-the shuswaps. my grandparents were alive and put in residential schools. some of the 77 people left alive in 1906. after that we were indctrinated into european life style. we were herded into residential school. james teit says our band was one fo the poorest bands. we had a good life style. we had over 350 people, we had to learn the king and queen life where the rest are poor. this was done through out the world. it has always been the elite running the wrold for many years and centuries. that is why there was so much poverty all over the world. we indians had a much different lifestyle that is foreign to european way of thinking. i know many people have mixed blood and many are pulled by european way of thinking which seems more main stream fitting in social norms.

There is nothing, nothing compared to the wealth of drinking from a nearby river, picking wild berries and mushrooms at your doorstep, raising family and cattle all together, breathing clean air and listening to the elders.... and never worry about money because there is no use to it.

I guess that depends on what we call poverty. Mostly, we define poverty, at least in the west, by how much we have, money, things, etc. But, when we look past our petty definition, we see a culture that was closer and far more self sufficient, which from a different perspective, is wealthier than we are now. This was emphasized by my friends who provide medical services in Uganda. When I see the kids there, I see a wealth that we gave up a long time ago and that is a wealth of joy within what they have and not in the next thing.

At least slaves were fed, clothed, and housed and didn't have to worry where their next meal was coming from.

most were mistreated; etc., no one should have another person as a slave

I can't see that being the case considering the price of a slave. Correct it to today's dollars. Very few could own slaves and those who abused them were throwing their money away. They basically traded labor for food, clothing, and housing. They couldn't leave the plantation without permission, though.

Our children are being led to believe that
slavery was invented by the United States of America
and that the founding Fathers were evil slave owners
and thus, this is a racist country.
