    History repeats itself…
Queen Victoria reigned for a very long time.
When she died, Her son became Edward VII.
A woman named Alice Keppel was his long-time mistress and confidante.
Queen Elizabeth II reigned for a very long time.
When she died, Her son became Charles III.
Charles III is Edward VII’s Great-Great Grandson.
Camilla is Alice Keppel’s Great Granddaughter.

    THE DIAMOND DEBATE
I find it very ironic and somewhat amusing that the death of a 96 year old lady in Britain has been managed by nothing else - the far lefts and the far rights of the political spectrum in South Africa are now best friends left The issue of this diamond. What I find disturbing is that the Afrikaans media, namely Die Burger, is giving them a platform because the noise about the diamond is actually an embarrassment to the country. This not only proves a tremendous lack of basic good manners but an emotionally immature, irrational interpretation and shocking ignorance of historical facts.
The farm on which the Cullinan mine stands was bought by Tom Cullinan in 1898 from the daughter of old boss Prinsloo. When the Cullinan diamond was discovered in January 1905 by a boyfriend named Wells, it was legally owned by the miners. It did not belong to South Africa because South Africa as a country did not exist yet. The diamond was offered for sale and there was no interest.
At this time, the old Transvaal Republic was partially self-ruling with the British king as head of state and Gen. Louis Botha as Prime Minister. On 17 October 1907, the Transvaal government bought the diamond at Cullinan for 150 000 pounds.
So tongue-in-the-pick we must add that in 1907 there was no such thing as income tax. The Transvaal Treasury's income was from toll taxes, rental of state land etc. But the biggest revenue was the reparations fees paid by Campbell-Bannerman’s Liberal Party government to try to alleviate the war damage. So Louis Botha bought the British king a birthday present with British money!
The Free State, Cape Town and Natal did not have ownership over that coin. On November 9, 1907, the Transvaal government gave the diamond as a gift to King Edward VII for his 66th birthday.
The stone is cut and sharpened by Ascher in Amsterdam. It takes more than 3 years. Staying there, next to Cullinan I and II, 7 large bricks and over 100 little ones left. The largest, Cullinan I, is mounted in the King's Empire Sector and the second largest, Cullan II, is mounted in The Imperial State Crown. The rest is being sold to cover the cost of the work.
South Africa, meanwhile busy forming a Union, buys back 6 of the bricks of Ascher, the 9th is known as Cullinan 4. Cullinan 4 is newly purchased at old Ascher by king Edward for his wife, queen Alexandra.
On 28 June 1910, the Union of South Africa donated the 6 bricks newly to the British foreman - this time the newly crowned King George V, who had them mounted in a necklace for Queen Mary. She liked to wear this necklace. Queen Elizabeth inherited it from her grandmother, but she would never wear it because "the black thing was constantly hanging in the soup", according to her.
What is the reality then? The diamonds were presented to the British prince on 2 occasions (1907 and 1910). And unfortunately you don't ask for a gift back. That's lousy manners.
The tragedy of this is that the people making the loudest noise now are also the first to abuse history for their own conviction.
On one hand a Bisho woman is demanding that the diamonds be returned because Queen Elizabeth herself sent slave ships to subdue people from South Africa.
On the other hand, an uncle from Pretoria gets terribly angry and demands that the diamond be returned because Queen Elizabeth "came and personally openly visited the concentration camps. "
Both comments on social media yesterday.
I understand that sometimes one gets emotional over this country's often tragic and sad history, but dear mighty, if you want to get emotional,
at least make the effort to know your timelines and facts before you put yourself in the ve opportunity set.

The diamond donation was already emotional. The wounds of the War were still raw. But it happened and nothing can change about it.

The diamond was not stolen and that's the hard, unfortunate reality.

This has been given away. Today it is in the Tower of London where anyone can visit and view it. I did,
in May of 2006 and it was a wonderful experience. It will also be visible when the scepter and crown will be laid on Elizabeth II's coffin
during her state inauguration next week.

About the fact that it is guarded in the Tower, I am personally very grateful.

I am willing to put my head on a block for it if it were to come back to South Africa it would be stolen in a few weeks.

The diamond drop down earrings don’t match perfectly, one is significantly larger than the other. The pear shaped stones are 7 and 12 carats and when looked at side by side it is quite easy to see that the shape is not quite the same. The Queen still wears this set today, and has been photographed many times with them.

Napoleon wanted his generals to appear rich and imperial, so he gave them large amounts of money to buy their wives jewelry to appear grand in the eyes of rival European Monarchies. That is how the Danish Ruby Set was created. From there, it would take more than six decades (and a lot of changing-hands) for the Parure and the rest of the set to wind up in Denmark.

The other either depicts Anne Boleyn or Catherine Parr—which woman it depicts, mother or stepmother, is hotly-debated. Plus, Queen Elizabeth I was unusually close to her stepmother, who was known for her red hair.

The tragic end of Howard has captivated historians for centuries.

The gold and enamel Phoenix is thought to have been created in the mid-1500s. The reason for the roses is that they were the symbol of the House of Lancaster. The red-and-white roses symbolized the love between Elisabeth of York and Henry VII.

The diamond, therefore, has a Royal connection because its cut was invented by Joseph Asscher in 1902. Asscher formed a prestigious diamond-cutting company, and he cut jewels for the Netherlands’ Queen Juliana. To this day, over a century later, Asscher-cut diamonds are usually associated with royalty and wealth.

    Estimated Value:
    $10,000-$500,000*
This Tiara, though stunning, is actually of unknown provenance. It’s possible that this Tiara originated from Princess Ingeborg of Sweden, the grandmother to Prince George. Ingeborg gifted tiaras to Princess Anne’s sister-in-law for her 1949 wedding, so perhaps she did the same for Princess Anne when it came time for her to get married.

This turban accessory has three plumes, all of which are made of diamonds. There is an emerald in the center. In Hindu literature, the emerald represents Mercury, a small-yet-mighty planet that holds a strong influence over someone’s life.
    171. Gold and Amethyst Bracelet
    Worn By: Queen Victoria
    Owned Since: 1839
    Estimated Value:
    $3,000*
Queen Victoria was famous for being very enamored with her husband. The Royal Family has not always been known for marrying out of love, but Queen Victoria and Prince Albert were soulmates. The two married in 1840, and they had nine kids together. When Queen Victoria announced that she and Prince Albert were engaged, she received a lot of lavish gifts.

One such gift was this gold and amethyst bracelet, which the Duchess of Kent gave her in late November of 1839. The bracelet was made of solid gold and featured two stunning purple amethyst hearts, no doubt to symbolize Albert and Victoria’s love for one another.
    172. Three-Strand Van Cleef & Arpels Suite
Worn By: Princess Grace of Monaco
    Owned Since: 1956
    Estimated Value:
    $500,000-$1 million*
Unlike a lot of European dynasties, Monaco doesn’t really have a conventional collection of jewelry handed down from generation to generation. Princess Grace Kelly had to start her own from scratch when she wed Prince Rainier in 1956. One set that she used to start her collection was a gift from Van Cleef & Arpels, a French jeweler.

The jeweler gifted her a pearl and diamond parure, but Van Cleef sent a sample to Prince Rainier first. Rainier loved the jewels so much that he bought an entire set from the jeweler’s boutique in New York. The set included a cultured pearl necklace, earrings, and a small bracelet, in addition to the parure.
    173. Princess Brooch
    Worn By: Queen Victoria
    Owned Since: 1841
    Estimated Value:
    $10,000-$50,000*
This brooch is exquisitely made, and no doubt Queen Victoria was delighted when she received it as a gift from her husband, Prince Albert. Albert designed the brooch himself as a Christmas present for the Queen in the early 1840s. Albert was inspired by the famous artist Raphael and his depictions of painted cherubs.

Victoria was thrilled at the craftsmanship, as well as how much thought that Albert put into it. She said that the workmanship and design were “exquisite,” as well as Albert’s “entirely own idea and taste.” She also said that Albert was “so pleased” that she loved it.
    174. Princess Charlene’s Engagement Ring
    Worn By: Princess Charlene
    Owned Since: 2011
    Estimated Value:
    $65,000*
Princess Charlene of Monaco married into the royal family when she tied the knot with Albert II back in 2011. Despite meeting in 2000, the couple didn’t become engaged until 2010. Thankfully, Albert made up for his procrastination by presenting his soon-to-be bride with a stunning three-carat diamond ring.

    51. Bleu Ballon Cartier Watch
    Worn By: Kate Middleton
    Owned Since: 2012
    Estimated Value:
    $5,200*
Kate Middleton is the epitome of class, but it isn’t just Her Majesty that loans her jewels. The Duchess has a collection of her own that was bought by her adoring husband, Prince William. At some point after their first wedding anniversary, Will bought his bride a $5,200 Cartier watch.

The 33 mm Blue Ballon is sleek and stylish, so it matches Kate down to the ground. William even has a similar timepiece, so they can match. It’s not the cheapest item in Kate’s jewelry box, but it’s not the most expensive, either.

Worn By: Birgitte, Duchess of Gloucester
    Owned Since: 1906-1921
    Estimated Value:
    $1 million*
You don’t have to be one of the most prominent members of the Royal Family in order to have a captivating jewelry collection. The Cartier Indian Tiara is made up of pearls, diamonds, and sapphires, making the headpiece undeniably huge.

Brigitte, Duchess of Gloucester, may be the proud owner of the diadem now, but it has a rich history that stems back to the early 1900s. It was originally made by Cartier for Princess Marie Louise, Queen Victoria’s granddaughter. She made the purchase after her marriage was annulled some time between 1906 and 1921.
    53. Crown Amethyst Suite of Jewels
    Worn By: Queen Elizabeth II
    Owned Since: Early 1800s
    Estimated Value:
    $750,000*
Queen Elizabeth II has always liked to wear bright colors over the years, especially in the last couple of decades. Brighter jewels like the Crown Amethyst Suite of Jewels certainly add a little something extra to her two-piece suits.

The suite originally entered into the royal family some time in the early 1800s to commemorate the untimely passing of Princess Charlotte of Wales. Consisting of a necklace, three brooches, earrings, and a pair of hair combs, the suite passed down through the lineage to Her Majesty. Liz likes to wear the shell-shaped diamond brooch on special occasions.

    Estimated Value:
    $22,000*
Kate employed the help of royal jewelers G Collins and Sons to create this stunning tanzanite necklace and earring set worth over $22,000 a few years ago. Many fans noticed that the shape and overall design looks similar to some emerald pieces previously worn by Princess Diana.

To the untrained eye, the tanzanite looks a lot like sapphire. Kate has worn the sparkly set on numerous occasions since she married Will back in 2011, including at her 2018 visit to the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. It never fails to draw attention.
    55. The Crown Orb
    Worn By: Queen Elizabeth II
    Owned Since: 1661
    Estimated Value:
Part of a $4 billion set
The Crown Jewels are eye-wateringly expensive and one of Britain’s most prized artifacts. Although not strictly a piece of wearable jewelry, The Orb is an important symbol of the monarchy. It was made for the coronation of King Charles II in 1661.

Built from gold, the hollow orb is home to 365 diamonds, 9 emeralds, 18 rubies, and 9 sapphires. On the top is a cross held in place by an amethyst – but it doesn’t stop there. 368 pearls top off the extraordinary piece held by every monarch on their coronation. It’s part of the Crown Jewels which are worth over $4 billion.
    56. Swan Lake Set
    Worn By: Princess Diana
    Owned Since: 1997
    Estimated Value:
    $13 million*
Interestingly, one of Princess Diana’s most famous and most valuable sets was the Swan Lake set. The Princess herself commissioned Garrard to make the suite for her sometime in 1997, but she never saw the other pieces. She wore the finished necklace to the Swan Lake ballet in London during one of her final appearances.

Subsequently, the set took its name from the event. When Diana passed away, the entire suite was auctioned off. It was most recently sold in 2018 for just under $13 million. The stunning diamond and pearl pieces will forever be acquainted with Diana.
    57. The Crown Ruby Necklace and Queen Victoria’s Crown Ruby Brooch
    Worn By: Queen Elizabeth II
    Owned Since: 1854
    Estimated Value:
    $1 million*
These pieces have a very interesting backstory. In fact, the giant rubies were once opals. Queen Victoria bought the necklace from Garrad back in 1854, but when Queen Alexandra inherited it, she took the opals out and replaced them with rubies as it simply wasn’t to her taste.

The Queen Mother eventually inherited the set and wore the pieces for years on numerous special occasions. When she passed away in 2002, Queen Elizabeth took to wearing them, but she hasn’t been spotted in them often. Perhaps she’s saving them for a rainy day.
    58. Emerald Necklace, Earrings, & Bracelet Set
    Worn By: Kate Middleton
    Owned Since: 2014
    Estimated Value:
    $2.5 million*
Kate certainly knows how to turn heads. Back in 2018, she attended the 71st BAFTAs with Prince William looking like a million dollars. Kate naturally matched her green gown with beautiful diamond drop earrings with huge emeralds and a matching necklace.

These weren’t items loaned from the Royal Collection for the festivities, but Kate’s own jewelry. Where did it come from? It’s a mystery. The suite was allegedly a “private gift” but the Duchess has never said who. Jane Fonda wore a similar set that was valued at $2.5 million.
    59. Scarab Brooch
    Worn By: Queen Elizabeth II
    Owned Since: 1966
    Estimated Value:
    $50,000*
One of the Queen’s most beloved brooches isn’t worth millions, but it has a priceless sentimental value. The Duke of Edinburgh gifted the Scarab Brooch to his wife back in 1966. Made of rubies, yellow gold, and diamonds, it’s an unusual piece but one that Liz adores.

Although she may have a brooch that’s worth in excess of $50 million, the Scarab Brooch is one of Elizabeth’s most worn and most treasured pieces. After all, it was given to her by her husband and that has to count for something.
    60. Emerald Floral Brooch
    Worn By: The Queen Mother
    Owned Since: 1943 (debated)
    Estimated Value:
    $75,000*
The Queen Mother was always a fan of a beautiful brooch, right up until the very last. One of the more frequently seen pieces from her collection was this large floral emerald number. The origin of the brooch is debated.

Author Leslie Field believes that the brooch featuring the square cut emerald was given to her by Mrs. Greville in 1942, but others say that this is unconfirmed. What we do know is that it’s likely worth a pretty penny. Camilla has been spotted wearing the brooch in recent years, but it remains the property of Queen Elizabeth II.
    61. Blue Topaz Earrings
    Worn By: Kate Middleton
    Owned Since: 2011
    Estimated Value:
    $18,000*
Kate has always been the first to match her jewelry to her gown. When it comes to coordination, Middleton has her style down to a fine art. Back in 2015, she attended the James Bond Spectre premiere wearing a lovely pale blue Jenny Packham dress.

She coupled them with stunning chandelier blue topaz earrings that dazzled with every flash of the camera. Kate likely borrowed the white gold diamond-encrusted earrings from her mother, Carole Middleton, as Carol was spotted wearing them at Kate’s wedding reception back in 2011.
    62. The Cullinan V Heart Diamond Brooch
    Worn By: Queen Elizabeth II
    Owned Since: 1911
    Estimated Value:
    $9.4 million*
Diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but they’re also synonymous with the House of Windsor. Her Majesty owns an incredibly beautiful brooch called the Cullinan V Heart Diamond. The heart-shaped rock was first designed for Queen Mary back in 1911 and has an 18.8 carat stone.

Given the number of carats and the wonderful history of the brooch (it was once part of the largest diamond ever found), this particular piece is likely worth in excess of $9.4 million. When it comes to accessories, the Windsors really know how to do it best.

    Worn By: Kate Middleton
    Owned Since: 2016
    Estimated Value:

    64. Megan Markle’s Engagement Ring
    Worn By: Meghan Markle
    Owned Since: 2017
    Estimated Value:
    $350,000*
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s engagement photos were slightly different from other engagement photos from the royal family when they made the announcement in 2017. The black and white photos debuted Meg’s Cleave and Company ring, but it was more than a very expensive rock.

At a cost of $350,000, Harry included an ethically-sourced diamond from Botswana to pay homage to the couple’s first vacation together. He then took two diamonds from a brooch of his mothers and nestled them on either side, for a truly iconic piece of jewelry that Meg couldn’t say no to.
    65. Birks “Snowstorm” earrings
    Worn By: Meghan Markle
    Owned Since: 2018
    Estimated Value:
    $12,000*
As soon as fans spotted Meghan Markle wearing these diamond earrings by Birks, they wanted to know everything about them. Suddenly imitation earrings popped up all over the place, selling out on websites like Etsy.

After all, the average person can’t afford to shell out $12,000 for a pair of studs – however much we would like to. The sweet earrings certainly suited Meghan and they must be a favorite of the Duchess’, considering that she wore them to her wedding rehearsal dinner in 2018.
    66. The Flower Basket Brooch
    Worn By: Queen Elizabeth II
    Owned Since: 1948
    Estimated Value:
    $50,000*
As you may have guessed by now, Her Majesty has tons of brooches. She has so many that she would probably struggle to wear them all frequently. However, Liz is also a sucker for sentimentality. This jeweled brooch looks just like a flower basket and was given to her by her mother and father after the birth of Prince Charles in 1948.

    67. Meghan’s Galanterie Diamond Stud Earrings
    Worn By: Meghan Markle
    Owned Since: 2018
    Estimated Value:
    $17,000*
Every bride needs something new to wear on their wedding day. Meghan Markle went all out for her big day in 2018, investing in several Cartier pieces – or at least, graciously receiving them. The Galanterie diamond studs are stunning yet simple, providing just enough pop to accentuate Meghan’s features.

The Duchess of Sussex loves them so much that she wore them to the christening of her son, Archie Mountbatten-Windsor on July 6, 2019. They looked just as good the second time around as they did on the first, which is a blessing considering how much they cost.
    68. The Five Aquamarine Tiara
Worn By: Sophie, Countess of Wessex
    Owned Since: 1968
    Estimated Value:
    $1.5 million*
The Five Aquamarine Tiara worn by Sophie, Countess of Wessex is largely a mystery. Early on in Queen Elizabeth II’s reign, Brazil gifted her with many dazzling aquamarines. The Queen made a tiara out of these, but the Queen’s version hasn’t been seen since 1970.

When Sophie made her aquamarine debut back in 2012, there were striking similarities between the two pieces, but they weren’t the same. Regardless of where it came from, it’s worth $1.5 million and an honorable addition to anyone’s collection.
    69. The Kent City of London Fringe Tiara
Worn By: Princess Michael of Kent
    Owned Since: 1934
    Estimated Value:
    $1 million*
The City of London was so thrilled when the Duke of Kent married Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark in 1934 that it offered up a very decent wedding gift. The government gifted the bride with the Kent City of London Fringe Tiara.

This tiara is very similar to the Vladimir Fringe Tiara that the Princess wore on her wedding day, but it shouldn’t be mistaken for it. Marina may not have worn the diadem when she tied the knot but she did sport it when attending several other special occasions, like the Greek state visit in 1963.
    70. Mother of Pearl & Diamond Necklace & Earrings
    Worn By: Kate Middleton
    Owned Since: Approx. 2018
    Estimated Value:
    $17,400*
Any jewelry enthusiast knows that Van Cleef & Arpels is the designer to beat. Elizabeth Taylor was a huge fan of the luxury French jeweler, having owned several pieces over the course of her life. Kate Middleton has her very own Mother of Pearl and diamond set which she doubted a couple of years ago.

The design wasn’t custom made for the Duchess but is rather one of the designer’s best-selling pieces. It’s not hard to see why Kate opted for this $17,000 set as it’s the embodiment of luxury.
    71. The Kent Diamond and Pearl Fringe Tiara
Worn By: Katharine, Duchess of Kent
    Owned Since: Early 1900s
    Estimated Value:
    $500,000*
Queen Mary loved her diamonds, so it’s only natural that this gorgeous diadem originally belonged to her. However, The Kent Diamond and Pearl Fringe Tiara has been changed somewhat over the years. It was initially a much smaller band of diamonds before being transformed into a fringe tiara by the Kents in the 1970s.

    74. Queen Mary’s Boucheron Loop Tiara
Worn By: Queen Mary of Teck
Owned Since: 1901/1902 (Exact Year Disputed)
    Estimated Value:

The exact value of the Boucheron Tiara is unknown, as it was dismantled just a decade after it was commissioned by Mary of Teck. The Boucheron Loop Tiara was made from gifts that Mary and George received during their tour of South Africa. De Beers, a mining company in South Africa, gifted Mary 675 diamonds during her 1901 visit.

    Estimated Value:
    $225,000*
When Princess Diana married Prince Charles in 1981, she donned this gorgeous 800-diamond headpiece. The tiara dated back centuries, and it belonged to the Spencer Family. Though the bridal tiara was in Diana’s family for centuries, the creation of the tiara is a little sooner.

    Owned Since: 1953
    Estimated Value:
    Unknown

The Platinum Fern Brooch from New Zealand is far more lavish. Kate Middleton was spotted wearing the Fern Brooch when she went on her own New Zealand tour in 2014. While the exact price is unclear, judging from the diamonds and platinum, it is probably worth a lot.

The Cambridge Emerald Necklace coordinates with the Cambridge Emerald Parure. The Necklace was created by Garrard back in 1921, and it was done in an Art Deco style. The Necklace became Queen Elizabeth II’s after she was crowned in 1953, but, because she doesn’t wear chokers, it sat in the collection, unworn for many years until Princess Di picked it up.

    Owned Since: 1930s
    Estimated Value:
    $100,000*
Queen Elizabeth always wears pearls. According to People Magazine, the reason behind her affinity for pearls has to do with her mother and grandmother. Queen Elizabeth’s mother and grandmother wore pearls every day, and she is determined to keep up with the tradition. One way she does that is by wearing the Three Strand Pearl Necklace.

This third piece differed from the other two because it had a diamond clasp, as it was a gift from the Emir of Qatar for Her Majesty’s 1953 coronation.

The Cameo Tiara has become a treasured part of the Swedish Royal jewel vaults.

Princess Margaret was married in the Tiara, but she was not buried in it, though she requested to be buried in her wedding garb upon her death. Perhaps the Swedish royals felt the Khedive Tiara was too beautiful to hide in a grave. Years later, Princess Anne-Marie of Denmark would wear the Tiara.
    90. The Vladimir Tiara
    Worn By: Queen Elizabeth II
    Owned Since: 1909
    Estimated Value:
    $1.051 million*
This is the most expensive Tiara in the Royal Collection. The Grand Duchess Vladimir Tiara spent many years as the rightful property of Russia. Duchess Vladimir Romanov commissioned the Tiara from the Court Jeweler, Bolin before her exile. It is extremely difficult to get any jewels from the Romanov vaults, so the fact that the Vladimir Tiara wound up in Queen Elizabeth’s hands is unusual.

A British officer, disguised as an old woman, snuck into the Romanov Palace at night and stole the Vladimir Tiara. He smuggled it to London, where The Grand Duchess was exiled. After her death, the Tiara was auctioned off, and the Royal Family bought it immediately.

Queen Maxima has owned the ring since March 30, 2001, the date of her engagement to the Prince of Orange. Orange diamonds, also known as “Pumpkin Diamonds,” are only found in two different places: South Africa or Australia’s Argyle Mine. The orange hue is caused by nitrogen in the carbon lattice structure of the diamond.

It’s $1-million-dollar value makes it an incredible honor and one that neither Kate Middleton nor Meghan Markle ever had the pleasure of receiving. Sophie doesn’t wear it on trips to Walmart so it’s seldom seen.
