as France made the change from the Julian calendar
by Julius Caesar to the Gregorian calendar by Pope Gregory XIII.
April 1st was the beginning of the year in the Julian calendar
and in the Gregorian calendar it begins on January 1st.
Therefore, anyone who still celebrated the New Year in the last week of March
until April 1st was laughed at and called "April fools."

The Gregorian Calendar began:
October 4, 1582
Pope Gregory XIII issued a papal bull,
which was called the "Inter Gravissimus"
on February 24, 1582.
It then established the Gregorian calendar as the new and official calendar
of the Catholic world.
Since the Julian calendar had fallen ten days behind over the centuries,
Pope Gregory XIII designated that October 4, 1582
(and; the 5th,6th,7th,8th,9th,10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th - be skipped)
and, the calendar would advance from 4 oct 1582
to, 15 oct 1582...
so, October 4th, 1582 would be officially be followed by October 15th, 1582.
