The Oldest Door in the UK. :

This oak door featured in Westminster Abbey is Britain’s oldest and only Anglo-Saxon Door.

The door has been standing for over 950 years,
dating back to the reign of Edward the Confessor during the 1050s.

The door was made from a single oak from Eastern England in medevial times.

6.5 feet high and 4 feet wide and leads into a small narrow room.

The top was almost certainly round-arched and would have been around 9 feet high originally.

After the planks were fitted together probably both faces were covered with cow hide,

added to provide a smooth surface for decoration (no trace of painting remains).

Then the ornamental iron hinges and decorative straps were fixed.

Only one of the original straps survives today with hide trapped underneath it (on the inner face of the door).
