One of the best features of the home is the large wrap-around porch with a white railing that definitely reminds you of a white picket fence. We can just imagine sipping sweet tea in a rocking chair under the porch fan!


Inside, the home is spacious with tall ceilings, ample windows for natural light, and neutral coloring. The light hardwood on the floors pairs nicely with the colors in the home including the white cabinets and countertops in the gourmet kitchen.

The Canadian company, Dwell Containers, has caught on to the idea of taking what was once forgotten and turning it into beautiful homes. By repurposing old shipping containers, they’ve come up with a design that can be either a tiny home or an office. The open floorplan has 160 square feet and with modern styling, they’re perfect for Millennials or anyone wanting a minimalistic life. The exterior of the homes is partially covered in wood siding and you can even have a large deck ordered for outside of the glass French doors.

This deck basically doubles your living space! And it would be easy to hang a canopy over the area to create a shady outdoor room for entertaining and dining.

Inside, the homes are basically a blank canvas with reclaimed wood on the walls and floors. The original shipping doors were left functional at the end of the container making it easy to move furniture and also letting you open the end of the home to the outside if desired.

A small kitchenette is at the end of the home with shiny white cabinets and wood countertop. There’s space for a mini-fridge to be slid under the counter as well. Or, if you’re going to use the unit as an office, you can instead have a desk installed in the same spot.

There are so many options available when it comes to home kits and different ways you can build them or have them built. This backyard cabin building is a great example of the prefab cabins and structures that are available to purchase. You could even set some of them up as a tiny house in your back yard and fit a mini kitchenette into it, and perhaps even rent it out to guests or have it for when your friends or family come to stay. This backyard cabin is called the Byron Summer Home and comes from The Natural Gardener. One thing that is becoming more popular is for homeowners to build a backyard tiny house like this one, for an income property that they rent out monthly to someone like a student or a business person. Another thing that is becoming popular is to put your back yard cabin on Airbnb as a vacation rental for people to stay in when they are vacationing.

This can be a wonderful way to make a supplementary income or a full-time income, just like an owner of a Bed and Breakfast. There are increasing numbers of people renting out spaces for this reason, all over the world, which is creating a great way to make some extra money while meeting people from all over the world. Many people use these spaces even as an extra space to put a studio for crafts, art, music or anything else, maybe even a little play area for their kids. This one only would cost a bit over $5000 to have built for you in your back yard, or just over $4000 to build it yourself, which isn’t too bad at all.


When you work from home, you might want to have your separate room for a home office, so a detached room in your back yard, like this one, would provide ample space to be able to work in. Sometimes they can even have a bathroom and a little kitchen, to make coffee and snacks in. This is another great reason why people are building accessory dwelling units in their very own back yards, for the specific purpose of using them as a home office. They can be just a room with a desk in it, and be built very simply if you don’t need much more then a desk and a place to set up your computer. This cabin is beautiful looking and quite different from most that we see. This cabin has full window pane doors that are accented with different features to make it look like a diamond shape in the pane. The two doors would be great to have for in the summer months to allow a lot of air into the space to cool it down.
There are even windows up above the one set of doors on the ceiling level, and windows on two sides of the house. A lovely little patio is perfect for a bistro set, to sit and enjoy coffees or teas. I love the different angles they have used on this house, it looks so modern and unique and works well for the design as a whole. The wonderful thing is that most of these structures can be easily constructed on your own accord, and usually, you can purchase one for a very affordable price, like this one, depending on how large you wish to create your backyard oasis. This particular one is one of the pre fabricated houses that you can purchase and build yourself.

One of a Kind School Bus Tiny House Conversion Built with Salvaged Materials

This is a 1969 International short school bus that was converted into the Old School B&B in British Columbia, Canada. It’s built with materials that were salvaged locally and it’s decorated with fun thrifted vintage items to bring us back to the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s.
The bus has a roof built above it to protect it from the weather and to cover the outdoor bathroom/outhouse as well as the porch area.

The interior space is 19′ feet long from front to back, 7.5′ wide, and 5’10” high in the middle.

It’s heated with a small Dickinson marine propane fireplace which is perfectly placed in the center of the bus to maximize heat distribution and to add a cozy ambiance. The bus walls and ceiling are insulated with rigid foam and the owner plans to add spray foam on the underside of the bus because the floors do get chilly in the colder months.
The driver’s seat area was converted into an indoor shower with salvaged granite tile and a window to let steam escape. The shower curtain has magnets along the side to keep it tightly closed so that no water leaks out.

The kitschy kitchenette is on the driver’s side of the bus. It has a long kitchen counter with a sink, a painted bar fridge, a 2-burner propane stove (with a hood fan!), and lots of storage space under the counter for dishes. Most of the visible windows are operable which allows for lots of natural air flow!

The passenger side of the bus has a copper penny desk and stool for working and crafting, and there’s also a dresser beneath it for linen and clothing storage.
The wheel wells were turned into two storage benches for lounging, eating meals, or playing board games and the rectangle cutout under the bed is actually a hidden folding table that can be set up between the benches.
A raised queen-size bed at the back creates loads of storage space beneath it, and it also saves floor space because it’s oriented side-to-side rather than front-to-back.

They built a bathroom/outhouse next to the bus with an Envirolet composting toilet and running water.
There’s a covered porch on one side of the bus and a firepit area on the other, which provides lots of outdoor living space as well.
