Overnight, here in Pacific time, the Sun shifted signs, leaving the harmony-loving, cardinal air sign of Libra for Scorpio's deep fixed water. Our central star will be traveling through this sign of intense emotion until November 21st, and will join Saturn, Mercury, and the North Node of the Moon, all traversing this sign of transformative power.
This year's Scorpio season will require careful navigation through a Mercury retrograde cycle in this Pluto-ruled sign, another exact Uranus-Pluto square alignment which falls precisely Scorpio's own solar festival, Samhain or All Hallows, and two days before a New Moon and solar eclipse in Scorpio. Samhain (pronounced sow-in), which in turn falls just two days before a New Moon and solar eclipse. Samhain marks the midpoint between the autumn equinox and the winter solstice here in the Northern Hemisphere and is one of four "cross-quarter" days, along with Beltane, Lughnassa and Imbolc.

Between Scylla and Charybdis

With so many compelling astrological events happening concurrently over this next solar month, we may find ourselves confronted with difficult dilemmas, choosing between Scylla and Charybdis — in other words, stuck between the devil and the deep blue sea.
Scylla and Charybdis were mythical sea monsters described in Homer's epic poem The Odyssey who plagued sailors in the Strait of Messina, between Sicily and the Italian mainland.

On the Italian side was Scylla, a treacherous rocky shoal (described metaphorically as a six-headed sea monster), while off the Sicilian coast lurked Charybdis that caused the waters to swirl and seethe into a deadly whirlpool. Together they formed an inescapable gauntlet causing sailors to choose between a rock and a hard place. As Homer described it, the hero Odysseus had to choose between the two while passing through the strait during his famous extended adventure on the Mediterranean. Odysseus opted to pass closer to Scylla and risk losing some of his crew rather than imperil his entire ship in Charybdis' treacherous whirlpool. The painting shown here by the 18th century Swiss painter Johann Heinrich Füssli depicts Odysseus facing this watery dilemma.
So here we navigating through our own "Strait of Messina" in which several challenging events will try to wrap their tentacles around us simultaneously, and all happening during this dark, Pluto-ruled Scorpio season. It's a good time to examine what Scorpio represents.

Pluto-Ruled Scorpio: Mistress of the Shadowy Depths

Scorpio symbolizes the process of death and rebirth, rules the time of year, here in the Northern Hemisphere, when the wheel is turning toward the darkest days of winter.

The leaves are falling, the days are shorter, and the nights are long. It is a time for rest, winter's long slow preparation for a new growing season come spring. All around us are the undeniable signs that life is beating a fast retreat. Hades has burst forth from the Underworld, standing strong in his dark chariot with his smoldering good looks. He's found his love, Persephone, and they are off to their winter timeshare. Mother Demeter will have to wait until spring to see her daughter again.

Contrary to the way in which this myth is told, I don't see Persephone as a "kidnap victim" — and reading the myth this way I think muddles the deeper meaning of her story. Rather, I suspect Persephone went willingly, and perhaps the truth of this old tale was lost in translation long ago. The time was ripe for Persephone to shed her old life; and it was her mother, the Goddess Demeter, who couldn't let go, and suffered for it, not Persephone. Persephone's story may be a distorted fragment of an older myth, one of a dark female agricultural figure of death and rebirth. Persephone has to sacrifice her protected life with mother because she has outgrown it. It's time to move on. She releases her past and steps into the unknown future. And for her courage, Persephone is transformed from maid into the Queen of Darkness, co-ruler of the Underworld, certainly not a victim, slave or mere wife.

This is an important distinction because Persephone is such a potent Scorpionic symbol of regenerative power. The painting shown above, by the French artist Charles-Joseph Natoire, depicts Persephone as the empowered, enthroned Queen of the Underworld sitting quite contentedly next to Hades as his equal. She is wise, powerful, and in the painting is giving Psyche l'elixir de beauté. Psyche had been sent by a jealous Venus to the Underworld on what Venus had hoped would be a "wild goose chase" that would end in Psyche's death. But that's another story....



According to the Roman poet Ovid, in his Metamorphoses, it was the nymph Arethusa who first reported to Demeter that Persephone was in the Underworld. Until then, she had been searching the world without pause for her missing daughter. Spring failed to arrive each year and famine had spread throughout the world. Ovid wrote that while traveling in her stream below the earth, Arethusa saw Persephone sitting on her throne as the queen of Hades. On hearing this, Demeter immediately got in her chariot and flew to Mt. Olympus to demand that Zeus return her daughter:
"... That she has been stolen, I will bear, if only he will bring her back; for your daughter does not deserve to have a robber for a husband."

To which Zeus replied:
"... If only we are willing to give right names to things, this is no harm that has been done, but only love ... But if you so greatly desire to separate them, Persephone shall return to heaven, but on one condition only: if in the lower-world no food has as yet touched her lips. For so have the Moerae decreed."

But it was too late, for Persephone had already eaten those pomegranate seeds, and because of this she had to stay in the Underworld. Yet Hades generously relinquished Persephone for part of the year — even when he did not have to — for as the Fates decreed, she was stuck there forever. In the Homer's Hymn to Demeter, there is an interesting passage where Hades speaks to Persephone, and from this we get a pretty good picture that Persephone was no powerless victim, but indeed a revered Queen:
"... And while you are here, you shall rule all that lives and moves and shall have the greatest rights among the deathless gods: those who defraud you and do not appease your power with offerings, reverently performing rites and paying fit gifts, shall be punished for evermore."

The myth of Persephone's abduction and return is allegorical and illuminates her role as the personification of the renewal of life each spring, life that springs from the seeds of the earth and withdraws back again after the autumn harvest with the seeds for next spring. Persephone was a vegetation goddess, and along with her mother were the central figures of the Eleusinian mysteries that predated the Olympian pantheon.

And so the Scorpio cycle symbolizes this same "descent" — the time when we are called to do the same, or rather symbolically the same: to face what is rotting in our lives, what is dead and dying and let it go, release it. The Scorpio cycle works much like a composter with the discarded, stale contents of our lives. Under cover of winter, what we release is transformed into gold: rich black earth for the seeds of spring. It's the necessary counterpart to vernal gestation, this Scorpionic creation of a fertile ground that supports new life. Persephone goes to the Underworld for six months of the year, embracing her darkness, but she reemerges, transformed and renewed as the May Queen, the Goddess of Spring, every year.

Scorpio cycles aren't limited to intense, life-or-death issues though. It can be a time to just simply take out the proverbial trash: deal with the clutter and stale air that has been accumulating in your life. Every gardener knows that in order to harvest more fruit, you have to prune your trees every winter. Releasing can be as simple as no longer returning the phone call of someone who — if you are "Scorpishly" honest about it — detracts rather than contributes to your life. It can mean facing where you play the victim and thus lose your power in certain relationships, and stopping that nonsense once and for all; or owning up to the fact that you are sometimes sneaky and manipulative rather than direct, clear and honest. It can be delivering a long overdue message of love, or telling someone who has hurt you the painful truth. It can even be something fun like gathering up all the drab, unhappy clothes in your closet, along with that chipped mug, and carting it all off to the Goodwill. It can be having the courage to start therapy in order to face some deep wounds from the past that still haunt you.

All you can learn is what your own inward life is and try to stay loyal to that. We must be willing to get rid of the life we've planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us. The old skin has to be shed before the new one can come.

Scorpio is the only sign to have three symbols — scorpion, eagle, and phoenix — a trinity of transformation. The phoenix is the mythical bird of Arabia, lost in the fire, yet arose from the ashes shiny and new, an ancient alchemical symbol of rebirth. The flames are purification, the burning of the dross — which can be an awful ordeal, exactly like burning in the fires of Hell.

What we give up, though, is the cost of our transformation, and what makes it hard is the degree to which you or someone else in your life — like Persephone's mother — is holding on and cannot let go. We sacrifice to make room for greater things, but it requires sometimes a powerful act of courage and a willingness to step into the unknown.
And this, for me, is the meaning and inspiration of Persephone's story and the Scorpio cycle. After all, the planetary co-ruler of Scorpio, along with courageous Mars, is Pluto, God of the Underworld — or Hades as he was called by the Greeks.

Death has already trampled a king and approaches a child, young woman, and a bishop begging to be spared — but no one is immune to Death no matter how powerful, pious or young. On Death's banner is the five-petaled white rose, which according to occultist Eden Gray is a symbol for the life-force and Mars, Scorpio's traditional ruler. The rose also carries the meaning of purity and heavenly passion: transmutation and spiritual perfection, it is an ancient symbol for spiritual joy. While most of us today equate the rose with love, it carries all of these meanings. The rose is also an emblem of secrecy. This is where the Latin term sub rosa, literally "under the rose," arose. When secret societies met in medieval times, this flower was hung from the ceiling to remind members that what was being discussed was to be held in strict confidence, it was knowledge for initiates only.
The river in the background of the card flows out to the sea, representing the transmuting nature of life: water evaporates into vapor, condenses into clouds, which then rains down as water once more. Matter is never lost, it only changes its form. In turn, Death is the closing of one door so another can open, putting the past behind us to embrace the new day. In the distance on the Eastern horizon, the Sun is rising. Death symbolizes the renewal that comes from release, its larger meaning. An ending yes, but also a new beginning.

The Serenity Prayer is, I think, particularly helpful at this Scorpio time of year, especially this year with the North Node of the Moon, Saturn, Mercury and now the Sun all traveling through this sign of deep transformative power.

But letting go of what no longer works in our lives and what we have outgrown can be a supremely difficult and scary task. Fixed, Pluto- and Mars-ruled Scorpio does not give up until it has exhausted its search for the deeper truth and sometimes that search can border on unhealthy obsession. Keeping a detached perspective can be difficult, especially now, and this simple prayer is a helpful reminder of the importance of knowing that place "where angels fear to tread" and those times in life when it is a much wiser to let it go, and release it to a higher power:

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change. The courage to change the things I can. And the wisdom to know the difference.

Total Lunar Eclipse Next Week Will Turn the Moon Blood Red (Video)

Skywatchers across much of the world will have the chance to see the moon glowing with an eerie red pallor during a pre-Halloween total lunar eclipse next week.

The "blood moon" total lunar eclipse will rise during the full moon of Oct. 8 just before sunrise in North America, but red might not be the only color people see during the total eclipse. Weather permitting, it's possible that some sharp-eyed observers might be able to see some blue in the moon's glow. The event will be the second of four consecutive total lunar eclipses in 2014 and 2015, according to NASA officials.
On the East Coast of the United States, totality starts at 6:25 a.m. EDT (1025 GMT), but stargazers on the West Coast of the United States will have an even better chance of seeing the rusty glow of the moon during totality. The eclipse will occur between 3:25 a.m. PDT and 4:24 a.m. PDT Wednesday. Observers in Australia and countries along the Pacific Ocean will also have the chance to see the eclipse. "It promises to be a stunning sight, even from the most light-polluted cities," NASA eclipse expert Fred Espenak said in a statement. "I encourage everyone, especially families with curious children, to go out and enjoy the event."

Next week's eclipse is the second in a so-called total lunar eclipse tetrad, a series of four consecutive eclipses that began earlier this year. The first total eclipse tetrad occured in April. The next total eclipse in the series will occur on April 4, 2015, and the fourth eclipse will rise on Sept. 28, 2015.

During total lunar eclipses, the moon passes into Earth's shadow, causing the planet to darken the face of the moon, according to NASA. Instead of making the moon go completely dark, the moon shines with a rosy hue during a total eclipse because it reflects light from the sun coming through Earth's atmosphere.
The color of the moon during a lunar eclipse actually depends on Earth's atmosphere. For example, a lot of volcanic activity on the planet can pollute the atmosphere and make the moon seem very dark in color during an eclipse, according to NASA.

"Despite some recent eruptions that look spectacular from the ground, there have been no large injections of volcanic gases into the stratosphere," atmospheric scientist Richard Keen of the University of Colorado said in the same statement. "In the absence of volcanic effects, I expect a rather normal reddish-orange lunar eclipse similar in appearance to last April's eclipse."

Blue hues on the moon?

Red isn't necessarily the only color skywatchers see during a lunar eclipse. Some observers have claimed to catch a hint of turquoise in the moon's color as well. The sun hitting the upper stratosphere, Keen said, can explain this odd color contrast.

"During a lunar eclipse, most of the light illuminating the moon passes through the stratosphere, where it is reddened by scattering," Keen said. "However, light passing through the upper stratosphere penetrates the ozone layer, which absorbs red light and actually makes the passing light ray bluer."

For most of human history, the moon was largely a mystery. It spawned awe and fear and to this day is the source of myth and legend. But today we know a lot about our favorite natural satellite. Do you?


The blue color — which can sometimes be seen on the rim of Earth's shadow against the moon — is best observed through a small telescope or binoculars during the first and last moments of totality, Keen added.
Lunar eclipses only fall on full moons and usually occur about twice a year. The moon's orbit is somewhat off-kilter, so instead of getting an eclipse every month, observers on Earth only see a lunar eclipse when the planet's shadow is favorably aligned with the natural satellite's orbit.

I say that because Venus is involved, as is Uranus and Pluto. It’s love and art and sex and anger, with a deep root. It’s rage that is real and may be subconscious.

It’s love to the same degree. I’m talking about love, you can’t get rid of because it’s in the blood.

Partial Solar Eclipse of October 23​

The final event of 2014 occurs at the Moon's ascending node in southern Virgo. Although it is only a partial solar eclipse, it is of particular interest because the event is widely visible from Canada and the USA (Figure 4).

The penumbral shadow first touches Earth's surface near the Kamchatka Peninsula in eastern Siberia at 19:37:33 UT. As the shadow travels east, much of North America will be treated to a partial eclipse. The eclipse magnitude from cities like Vancouver (0.658), San Francisco (0.504), Denver (0.556), and Toronto (0.443) will surely attract the media's attention.

Greatest eclipse occurs at 21:44:31 UT in Canada's Nunavut Territory near Prince of Wales Island where the eclipse in the horizon will have a magnitude of 0.811. At that time, the axis of the Moon's shadow will pass about 675 km above Earth's surface. A sunset eclipse will be visible from the eastern half of the USA and Canada (except for the far northeast). The partial eclipse ends when the penumbra leaves Earth at 23:51:40 UT.

Local circumstances and eclipse times for a number of cities in Canada and Mexico are listed in Table 4, and for the USA in Table 5. All times are in Local Daylight Time. The Sun's altitude and azimuth, the eclipse magnitude and eclipse obscuration are all given at the instant of maximum eclipse. When the eclipse is in progress at sunset, this information is indicated by '- s'.

This is the 9th eclipse of Saros 153 (Espenak and Meeus, 2006). The series began on 1870 Jul 28 with a string of 13 partial eclipses. The first of 49 annular eclipses begins on 2104 Dec 17. The series ends with a set of 8 partial eclipses the last of which occurs on 3114 Aug 22. This holiday is also known as Candlemas, or Brigid's (pronounced BREED) Day. One of the 4 Celtic "Fire Festivals. Commemorates the changing of the Goddess from the Crone to the Maiden. Celebrates the first signs of Spring. Also called "Imbolc" (the old Celtic name).

This is the seasonal change where the first signs of spring and the return of the sun are noted, i.e. the first sprouting of leaves, the sprouting of the Crocus flowers etc. In other words, it is the festival commemorating the successful passing of winter and the beginning of the agricultural year. This Festival also marks the transition point of the threefold Goddess energies from those of Crone to Maiden.

It is the day that we celebrate the passing of Winter and make way for Spring. It is the day we honour the rebirth of the Sun and we may visualize the baby sun nursing from the Goddess's breast. It is also a day of celebrating the Celtic Goddess Brigid. Brigid is the Goddess of Poetry, Healing, Smithcraft, and Midwifery. If you can make it with your hands, Brigid rules it. She is a triple Goddess, so we honour her in all her aspects. This is a time for communing with her, and tending the lighting of her sacred flame. At this time of year, Wiccans will light multiple candles, white for Brigid, for the god usually yellow or red, to remind us of the passing of winter and the entrance into spring, the time of the Sun. This is a good time for initiations, be they into covens or self-initiations.

Imbolc (February 2) marks the recovery of the Goddess after giving birth to the God. The lengthening periods of light awaken Her. The God is a young, lusty boy, but His power is felt in the longer days. The warmth fertilizes the Earth (the Goddess), and causes seeds to germinate and sprout. And so the earliest beginnings of Spring occur.

This is a Sabbat of purification after the shut-in life of Winter, through the renewing power of the Sun. It is also a festival of light and of fertility, once marked in Europe with huge blazes, torches and fire in every form. Fire here represents our own illumination and inspiration as much as light and warmth. Imbolc is also known as Feast of Torches, Oimelc, Lupercalia, Feast of Pan, Snowdrop Festival, Feast of the Waxing Light, Brighid's Day, and probably by many other names. Some female Witches follow the old Scandinavian custom of wearing crowns of lit candles, but many more carry tapers during their invocations.

IMBOLC LORE
It is traditional upon Imbolc, at sunset or just after ritual, to light every lamp in the house - if only for a few moments. Or, light candles in each room in honour of the Sun’s rebirth. Alternately, light a kerosene lamp with a red chimney and place this in a prominent part of the home or in a window.

If snow lies on the ground outside, walk in it for a moment, recalling the warmth of summer. With your projective hand, trace an image of the Sun on the snow.

Foods appropriate to eat on this day include those from the dairy, since Imbolc marks the festival of calving. Sour cream dishes are fine. Spicy and full-bodied foods in honour of the Sun are equally attuned. Curries and all dishes made with peppers, onions, leeks, shallots, garlic or chives are appropriate. Spiced wines and dishes containing raisins - all foods symbolic of the Sun - are also traditional.

Ritual for Imbolc/Candlemas

Supplies: Symbol of the season, such as a white flower, snow in a crystal container, also needed, an orange candle anointed with cinnamon, frankincense or rosemary oil (unlit), red candle to represent the elements, and your ritual supplies.

Arrange the altar, light the candles and censer, and cast the Circle.
Invoke the Goddess and God.
Say such words as the following:
"This is the time of the feast of torches,
When every lamp blazes and shines
To welcome the rebirth of the God.
I/we celebrate the Goddess,
I/we celebrate the God;
All the Earth celebrates
Beneath its mantle of sleep."
Light the orange taper from the red candle on the altar. Slowly walk the circle clockwise, bearing the candle before you. Say these or similar words:

"All the land is wrapped in winter.
The air is chilled and
Frost envelopes the Earth.
But Lord of the Sun,
Horned One of animals and wild places,
Unseen you have been reborn
Of the gracious Mother Goddess,
Lady of all fertility.
Hail Great God!
Hail and welcome!"

Stop before the altar, holding aloft the candle. Gaze at its flame. Visualize your life blossoming with creativity, with renewed energy and strength.
If you need to look into the future or past, now is an ideal time.
Works of magic, if necessary, may follow.
Celebrate the Simple Feast.
Thank the Goddess and God.
Release the Circle.

Spring Equinox Supermoon solar eclipse: Rare celestial phenomenon will make March 20 even more special

The evening before the solar eclipse, the Earth and Moon will be as close together as they possibly can be, giving rise to a so-called Supermoon​

The biggest solar eclipse in Britain since 1999 will be even more special than first thought - because the night before there will be a Supermoon.
On the morning of March 20, the moon will cover the sun, blocking out up to 98 per cent of its light.

But as if this were not impressive enough, the evening before the phenomenon the Earth and Moon will be as close together as they possibly can be, giving rise to a so-called Supermoon.

This makes the 2015 Spring Equinox eclipse a supermoon eclipse, which means a supermoon, equinox and eclipse will all fall on the same day.
The partial eclipse will been seen across Northern Africa, Europe and Northern Asia.

It happens when the moon's orbit takes it in front of the sun, casting a shadow over the Earth.
Between 30% and 98% of the sun's light will be blocked out, depending on location.

The further north you move, the greater the percentage of light that will be blocked.

England will be treated to a partial eclipse of more than 80% of the sun obscured - this rises to more than 90% in Scotland.

The west coast of the Isle of Lewis will see the deepest partial eclipse in the UK, with 98% of the sun obscured at around 9.36am.

George Ward, the treasurer of Thanet Astronomy Group, told Mirror Online he was looking forward to the "double event" of the Supermoon and the eclipse.
"The Supermoon is well worth looking at," he said.

"It (the Supermoon) is a rarish event and with binoculars you can see impressive details of the moon's surface that you can't during a full moon because it's too bright.
"As for solar eclipses they don't happen that often here - the last one was in 1999."

The 74-year-old, who lives in Margate, added: "The Supermoon and the eclipse together makes it a little bit extra special.
"I will be outside with my camera."


What is a solar eclipse?

A solar eclipse is when the moon covers the sun, blocking out its light.
It can only happen when the moon moves directly between the sun and Earth and its shadows fall upon Earth’s surface.
But this does not necessarily mean that the the alignment produces a total solar eclipse - many that happen are only partial and various factors influence its impact.

How often do they happen?

Solar eclipses happen on average 2.4 times a year.
Fred Espenak, an American astrophysicist and world-leading scientist on eclipses, explains that the rare phenomenon can be accurately predicted.
He said: "Certainly within 100 to 200 years we can predict when an eclipse will occur to within a second, but the pattern of occurrence is a complicated one.
"They don't repeat on a time schedule like the seasons of the year”.

If you miss this eclipse you'll have to wait another 11 years until 12 August 2026.
The eclipse in 1999 was the first seen in the UK since 1927.

So what makes this one so special?

In 2003, 2006, 2008 and 2011 there were solar eclipses visible from the UK, but they were only partial.
This upcoming eclipse is likely to plunge the UK into darkness with Scotland seeing 94% of its sun rays being blocked out.
It will be the biggest since the last significant eclipse, in 1999.

When is it?

It will be visible on the morning of March 20, with the eclipse visible from across Europe for approximately 90 minutes.
In London it will begin at 8.45am, hitting its peak at 9.31am.

Where will it take place?

Unlike the 1999 eclipse which was visible along a line including the southern UK, northern France, Belgium, Luxembourg, southern Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia and Hungary, the March eclipse will appear across far northern regions of Europe and the Arctic.

The path of total eclipse travels from just below the Greenland peninsula, heading north into the Arctic Circle.

The course takes it across the Norwegian island of Svalbard and also the Faroe Islands, for a full two minutes and nine seconds of total solar eclipse.
These are the only two places which are easy to reach where the full total eclipse can be seen.

Although it will be trickier for those on mainland Britain to see the eclipse this doesn't meant that the sun won't be partially obscured.

Venus and Jupiter Create Breathtaking “Double Star” on June 30th

After weeks of gliding closer together in the evening sky, Venus and Jupiter, the brightest celestial objects after the Sun and Moon, will be dramatically close together in the western sky after sunset on Tuesday, June 30th. According to Sky & Telescope magazine, as seen from North America, the two planets will be just ¹⁄₃° apart — so close together that you'll be able to cover them both with the tip of an outstretched little finger.

"To the eye they'll look like a double star," says S&T Senior Editor Kelly Beatty. "Anyone who hasn't glanced at the evening sky for a while will be surprised by how dramatically tight the pairing is." The two planets spend eight evenings, from June 27th through July 4th, within 2° of each other (about a thumb's width at arm's length). Not far to their upper left, appearing much fainter, is Regulus, the alpha star in the constellation Leo.

Astronomers refer to such a celestial convergence as a conjunction. Close pairings of Venus and Jupiter are not particularly rare, however. They appeared slightly closer together (though not as high up) before dawn on August 18, 2014, and they'll be separated by about 1° before dawn on the morning of October 26th. During a remarkable conjunction on May 17, 2000, Venus and Jupiter were just 0.01° apart (but too near the Sun to be seen). Next year, on August 27th, they'll dazzle again during an evening conjunction with a separation of just 0.1°.

"Planetary conjunctions have no effect on Earth or human affairs," notes Sky & Telescope Senior Editor Alan MacRobert. "But they can draw attention away from our own little world and into the enormous things beyond. In fact, a spectacular conjunction like this often gets people started in amateur astronomy."
At the beginning of June, the two planets were 20° apart in the sky, about twice the width of your fist held at arm's length. Week by week, Jupiter and the stars behind it have gradually slipped lower in the evening twilight. But Venus, due to its rapid orbital motion around the Sun, has stayed high up. The resulting slow-motion convergence put them 6° last week, when a thin crescent Moon joined the scene, and set the stage for Tuesday's culmination.

Although the two planets appear very near one another in the sky, they're actually not. Venus is 58 million miles (77 million km) from Earth, and Jupiter is 12 times farther out at 565 million miles (909 million km).
The pairing on June 30th is so tight that a small backyard telescope will show both planets in the same field of view, with Venus appearing as a brilliant, fat crescent and Jupiter accompanied by its four largest moons. Telescopically, the two planets will appear identical in size — a coincidental illusion because Jupiter, though much farther away, is enormously larger than Venus. The two globes will contrast dramatically in brightness, with Venus's crescent appearing dazzlingly white compared to Jupiter's duller, striped cloud deck.
Sky & Telescope Contributing Editor Fred Schaaf points out that this current trio of Venus-Jupiter conjunctions closely resembles a similar series in 3-2 BC that has been suggested as the Star of Bethlehem. "As has been the case in 2014–15," Schaaf explains, "the first two conjunctions back then were extremely close, the last one separated by about 1°, all three occurred not far from Regulus, and all were similarly high up in the sky."

“The Lunar Eclipse occurs in the 4th degree of Libra at 11:48 a.m. UT and augurs a time of if we fail to remember that the urgency we currently feel is not to be trusted!

“With Saturn stationing retrograde in a few days’ time, we may already be feeling the burden of trying to remain positive when much around us seems to be spiralling into negativity. Previously buoyant attitudes may be waning, fears bubbling up and anxieties taking centre stage.

“If so, it’s time to cut ourselves and each other some slack; toaccept that waves of energy come and go. Activity is followed by exhaustion, progress by inertia, excitement by quiet repose.

“If we try to push too hard against prevailing conditions now, desperate to maintain ‘progress’ no matter what, we may end up burning out and creating more stress rather than less.

“We cannot, at this point, extricate ourselves into ‘better times’ simply by sheer force of will. It is time to rest, stop and reflect.
